INTEGRATIVE SEMINAR WEEK 3

22 AUGUST,2019.

For todays class we were suppose to read the first chapter of metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. We were informed to read the first chapter in groups of 3, so we could understand it much better as we would get others opinion too.

Franz Kafka was on born July 3, 1883 in Prague. brought up in a middle class Jew family. Kafka had a complicated relationship with his father. he even wrote a 60 pages letter to his dad. he gave the letter to his mother, but she was afraid the letter would make his father sad which is why she did not give the letter to him. Franz Kafka was a German-language writer of visionary fiction.

The Metamorphosis is one of the best work of Franz Kafka. Isolation and alienation are major themes in The Metamorphosis.

It about the story of salesman Gregor Samsa who wakes one morning to find himself transformed into a huge insect and struggling to adjust to this new condition. later miss asked the class for our personal opinion about the character
In the second half of the lecture we discussed about Gregor Samsa’s character, his family and their character. We learnt that Gregor reflects on how dreary life as a traveling salesman is. we also learn that he hated his job but kept it because of the obligations he felt to pay off his fathers debt and to take care of his family .

We also learn a lot about his characteristics, we see that Gregor is a really caring person , He sacrifices his passion for his family. When his father’s business failed, he readily accepted his new role as the moneyearner in the family without question. when he first realizes he has transformed into an insect, he quickly accepts that he has become a bug and tries to go about his life as best he can in his new condition. It takes him time to realize that he can no longer play that role in his family and that he can’t even go outside in his current state. He finds that he is at hiding in the dark under the sofa in his room, like a bug would, even though his body won’t fit comfortably. He also discovers that he enjoys crawling on the walls and ceiling

Metaphors used:

  1. a gargantuan pest
  2. flickered helplessly before his eyes
  3. which he had cut out of an illustrated magazine a gargantuan pest

  9. it became apparent that his body was too wide to go through any further.
  10. hissing like a wild savage
  11. The attorney fled momentarily from his mind
  12. She was clever; she had already cried
