SUSTAINABLE SYSTEM WEEK1

6th January, 2020.

In the first week of sustainable system, a brief introduction of the subject was given to us. to make it more easier sir broke down the word sustainable system and explained it

  • Sustainability – The ability to be maintained at a certain rate.
  • Sustaining anything – To help maintain the flow.
  • Systems – a set of things working in an organized scheme.
  • Sustainable Systems – the working of all the sustainablities with in a system in an organized manner.

In the second half we were asked to watch two videos.’ how wolves change rivers’ the video revolved around the problems faced by Yellowstone national park, the park had faced a major disturbance (most of the plants and vegetation and animal population were destroyed). There was no population of wolves at the park in the last many years, To make the situation better, wolves were introduced to the park. Introduction of the wolves, helped in increasing animal and plant population. and also had an effect on the river pattern, wolves helped revive the park. This video made me realise, how the subtraction of one element could cause a disturbance in the entire ecosystem. this also helped me understand the importance of maintaining balance in sustainable system, and how like a domino effect, one can affect the entire system.

The next video we watched was ‘what if bees went extinct’ this video talked about how bees could affect the human population in a negative way. major the element that affect the bee population is climate change. bees being the biggest pollinators play a major role and are important for growth of flowering plants and fruits, this led to the depletion of flower meadows, even the production of honey was very less, Various other industries are depended on the work of bees i.e. pollination, with the depletion in the population of bees, there was a loss in the production of fruit.

There are some areas which help me be more sustainable and efficient while some which don’t The most sustainable area in my routine is that i prefer using public transport like trains and buses. I always travel by train from Santacruz to Prabhadevi to reach school and for short distance I prefer to walk and reach my destination. while its not only keeping the environment( air) clean but also saving my money and surely causing less traffic.
The least sustainable area in my routine is the wastage of water on daily basis, i usually take long showers ( approx 50 minutes ). and i end up wasting a lot of water. which affects our environment. more the water is wasted all the eco system is also affected that is trees, animals etc.

Lastly we discussed about the 3R’s

  • recycle- recycling plastic or old containers
  • Reduce- reduce the usage of electricity
  • remake- remake new items using old ones
  • refuse- do not use of plastic items
  • repair- repairing the broken parts in a car to the increase the life.
  • replace- replace the plastic straws with paper straws.
  • reuse- reuse old clothes as mops
  • I believe out of all these, reduce seems the most relevant, by reducing the purchase of unwanted things will automatically contribute to the environment.

REFLECTION

I learnt the concept of sustainable system that is its meaning, cause, effects, advantages and disadvantages. and mainly understood how important it is to us.by watching the videos I realised how animals play an important part in our eco system. I gained more knowledge about the three R’s. and got to know more about others r also that is REMAKE, REFUSE, REPAIR, REPLACE, RESPECT.
